Private commission, graphite on Fabriano Artistico Paper.
Graphite on fabriano F4 smooth paper commission I made for a collector obsessed with Batmans on gargoyles. I ended up replacing the traditional gargoyle imagery with an owl because it has so many more meaningful connections to the very foundation, the roots of the Batman character.
Graphite and gouache illustration.
Started as a digital procreate doodle then I decided to finalize it as a traditional media piece.
You can buy the giclee print of the final piece in the print section of my online store and the graphite and gouache final piece as well, you can find it in the fine art section.
The giclee print is signed by the author and printed on A3 Hahnemühle museum quality, 100% cotton, acid free 310GSM photo rag paper.
Image below: the initial procreate doodle.
Detail from the final piece:
Teaser poster for upcoming comic book series "Il Confine" by Mauro Uzzeo and Giovanni Masi. It will be published in Italy by Sergio Bonelli Editore and will be adapted as a TV series by Lucky Red.
It's an A3 graphite, airbrushed watercolour and gouache grayscale image on Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed paper. Colour was applied with a digital post production process.
Here is the full step by step tech breakdown, from digital procreate sketches, to graphite pass, airbrush midtones, gouache highlights.
Once again I make my way in Jeff Vandermeer's imagination, trying to explain what I saw in his powerful, mind bending words. Once again, thanks to Monica Aldi, Viviana Gottardello and Francesco Guglieri for choosing me: it was such a fun project to work on!
Jeff Vandermeer's Borne will be published in Italy by Giulio Einaudi Editore.
The final cover illustration will be printed in two physical layers: a transparent one with typography assets and the cyan circle while everything else is printed on a traditional hardcover print.
I made this drawing starting with an ink and graphite underpainting on 46 x 61 cm 310 GSM hot pressed / satin Arches paper. You can buy this drawing in my online store.
Then I colored it digitally. Here is a making of gallery.
Annihilation, Authority and Acceptance are three novels in the same trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer.
Back in 2015 Giulio Einaudi Editore published the whole series and I took care of the cover illustrations fo the three books. Now, Giulio Einaudi Editore is collecting the entire trilogy in a convenient single softcover book format and guess what? I did the cover illustration for it.
Then I added color in photoshop.
The final printed product is a standard CMYK image.
Many thanks to Monica Aldi, Viviana Gottardello and Francesco Guglieri from Giulio Einaudi Editore for sending me back to the Area X to snap a last picture out of it.
A making of gallery:
I'm considering going unplugged for this year to come. No computer. I feel there's still too much to discover in traditional media techniques and so little time!
I started this drawing this summer while I was on a movie set, and literally didn't have time to finish it till now.
It was fun.
It's a graphite drawing with digital color: It's my first experiment with graphite powder, I used it to fill big, flat areas.
Some process pics:
Final graphite pass original drawing available in the fine art section of my online store.
Ultrachrome on 330 GSM Hanemuhle Rag Bright White A2 Print available in the print section of my online store.
Luca Raffaelli asked me to create an illustration for the 2017 edition of "La Città Incantata" official poster. "La città incantata" is an international animation film festival in Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy, featuring the cream of the crop of the worldwide animation production.
Here is a quick process breakdown.
I started with a digital sketch:
Then I traced it as an hard black lumograph pencil drawing on 300gsm hot pressed Fabriano Artistico, 30,5 x 45,5 cm. This passage ensures the best possible stroke dynamic range and texture. (For sale in my store)
Then I added color in Photoshop.
Here! A first batch of characters for my book in the making, "Geist Maschine"! Enjoy!
BIG UPDATE! Looks like my cover for "MANGA" by Jean Marie Bouissou just went international: the guys at Editions Philippe Picquier did like the cover I made for the italian adaptation (by the beautiful people at Tunué) of their book and decided to use it as the official international cover! Oui oui!
Back to analog for this one! It was a blast with my new Tachikawa pen holder and a superfine Nikko pen nib! In the gallery, you'll find some making of shots and my takes on the Hobby Comic Issue number 4 special colour! The original is a small format of ultra thick french paper.
Some anticipations. Let me introduce you Rosabella. It's been a while since I did my last analog penciling work. In the gallery the original drawing I started from.
