I had the immense luck and honour to have my work featured as the main exhibition in “Lucca Comics & Games 2018”, the most important comic book event in Italy and the biggest in Europe for tickets sold. This is one of the most important acknowledgement a comic book artist can achieve in Italy and I still can’t believe it really happened to me.
I had the opportunity to put around 250 pieces on display, ranging from the very first self published comics from 1998 to my latest works. In particular, seeing those tiny bits of paper from my teenage hanging in that museum, the one that hosted some of the greatest artists in the world, really moved me as I perfectly remember the day I did those: back then I definitely wasn’t hoping for such an incredible destination.
The exhibition included a special performance area where I signed the official poster(s) I made for Lucca Comics & Games 2018 using an axidraw cnc plotter. This was very fun as I never saw any of those posters before: they are generative, one of a kind prints, I will soon make a in depth case study about it. Every time I got a poster to sign I was shocked. I was way more excited to sign those poster than the attendees waiting for my signature. I must admit that I was often tempted to keep the best ones for me, but I managed to resist.
Anyway: my weird idea of printing and giving away thousands of illustration I never saw, hundred of unique signatures I made without touching the drawing itself, preserving a full digital to analog pipeline where every single piece is an original, one of a kind piece of art is finally accomplished.
Moreover: my axidraw plotter was connected as an audio feed via piezo electric mics to a monomachine: the mono processed the sound coming from the two axidraw brushless motors generating an eerie and futuristic soundscape for the exhibition in realtime, with no chance of hearing the same sound twice.
The exhibition was curated by Guido Martini and the text was written by Adriano Ercolani.
I’m at a loss for words when it comes to thank the incredible “Lucca Comics & Games” team as they did a tremendous job on setting up my exhibition and making my dreams come true: a unique and perfect mix of world class professional excellence and unrelenting kindness.
